155: Reasons To Do It Yourself.

I recently posted on Instagram about my must-have items in my tool kit.

In case you missed it, this was it:

I then put it to the group (or my Instagram stories) and asked if there were any essential tools that I had missed…Most of the responses were similar to this:

Which surprised me.

But perhaps I’m naïve in thinking everyone loves DIY as much as I do. Then again, my own Insta feed is filled with dog accounts interspersed with DIY loving homeowners and up-cyclers - so maybe my assumptions are founded in what I surround myself with.

And I’m inspired by these accounts. I want to copy their DIYs. I want to cover everything in micro cement and build a table from reclaimed wood.

I’m not saying I can do it - but I’m inspired enough to not feel like I can’t.

So after talking to my followers and a couple of people in actual real life, I came to find that DIY isn’t for everyone.  Mainly because they don’t know how to approach it.

And then I realised that I literally just forgot who I was for a minute - and I remembered that I once felt the same way.

5 years ago, I didn’t know how to do anything except stick a picture frame up with a nail and hammer (by the way, this is still how I do it and sometimes when I can’t find my hammer, I use the end of a nearby candlestick or equally heavy object).

But the reason I can do all my own DIY now is because I got fed up of waiting for anyone else to do it for me. So I learned.

I wasn’t going to stand there and cry over unmounted shelves any longer, I was going to drill some holes in my wall and put them up.

And do you know what, they didn’t fall down. They’re even quite level.

When I work with my clients, it is part of the package. I’m going to teach you how to do that bit of panelling, paint the staircase or put those damn shelves up…If you want to achieve a DIY project and you don’t know how yet - that’s ok, I’ll help you figure it out.

Once you start to see what’s possible it’s hard not to feel inspired…

No more waiting for anyone else. You got this.

So, I’m interested to know, if you could learn…would you?

Or would you still rather get someone to do it for you?

P.S head over to my Instagram @155interiordesign for some how to’s…you never know where it will lead to!
